MacArthur BART Lighting

Urban Planning Partners led community outreach for a lighting design project at MacArthur BART Station aimed at improving the experience of people using the station’s 40th Street underpass.

Urban Planning Partners designed and implemented an outreach strategy to gather feedback and ideas from a diverse group of community members and stakeholders. The multi-pronged approach included targeted outreach to neighborhood associations adjacent to the station, direct solicitation of station users during peak commute times, and an online survey. Urban Planning Partners role in the project included:

  • Synthesizing over 300 survey responses into trends and key points that were easily digestible by the public and the project engineers

  • Producing data visualizations that created greater project understanding and helped BART define the goals of the project

  • Meeting BART riders and neighborhood residents in their own communities to ensure input was received from the project’s end users

The survey results and public feedback that Urban Planning Partners collected fed into the final project which will ultimately create safe and welcoming access to the station with a community-informed design.

Project Stats

  • 1,400 postcards were passed out at the MacArthur BART station to elicit feedback on the project

  • 322 community members responded to the online survey

Why We Liked This Project: We got to bring light to the darkness! As an added bonus, MacArthur BART was the home station of UPP’s Project Manager, Emilie Wolfson, so she got to work on a project shaping and energizing the look and feel of her very own commute.
